Basal area increment model of araucaria trees in uneven aged forest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Costa, Emanuel Arnoni; Finger, César Augusto Guimarães; Hess, André Felipe.
The present study aimed to develop a mathematical model to describe annual periodic percentage increment in basal area of Araucaria angustifolia trees with data collected from increment cores extracted radially from the trunk at breast height of 109 trees distributed in a large diameter range. Dendrometric and morphometric attributes were tested by multiple linear regressions as independent variables and their interactions with dummy variables as descriptors of social position class. The model explains 80% of total variation of the periodic annual percentage increment in basal area with formal crown and height/diameter relationship for trees of all social positions, as well as length and crown proportion of dominant trees described by the dummy variable....

Changes in polyamines content associated with zygotic embryogenesis in the Brazilian pine, Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. Rev. Bras. Bot.
Astarita,Landro V.; Handro,Walter; Floh,Eny I.S..
Changes in the polyamine content were analyzed in different embryo developmental stages and tissues during seed development in the conifer Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. Free polyamine contents varied according to the tissue and stage of embryo development, the highest levels occurring in the embryonic axis at the early stages, when putrescine and spermidine were most abundant. The levels of spermidine were higher from the stage where cotyledons arise, whereas putrescine decreases. The putrescine/spermine+spermidine ratio was higher during the initial phases of seed development, corresponding to cell multiplication and elongation, with a decrease in the final stages, corresponding to stabilization of the dry matter content.

Changes of wood anatomical characters of selected species of Araucaria- during artificial charring - implications for palaeontology Acta Botanica
Osterkamp,Isa Carla; Lara,Daniela Müller de; Gonçalves,Thaís Alves Pereira; Kauffmann,Marjorie; Périco,Eduardo; Stülp,Simone; Machado,Neli Teresinha Galarce; Uhl,Dieter; Jasper,André.
ABSTRACT Charcoal is widely accepted as evidence of the occurrence of palaeo-wildfire. Although fossil charcoal remains have been used in many studies, investigation into the anatomical changes occurring during charring are few. The present study analyses changes in selected anatomical characters during artificial charring of modern wood of three species of the genus Araucaria (i.e. Araucaria angustifolia, Araucaria bidwillii and Araucaria columnaris). Wood samples of the studied species was charred under controlled conditions at varying temperatures. Measurements of anatomical features of uncharred wood and artificial charcoal were statistically analysed. The anatomical changes were statistically correlated with charring temperatures and most of the...

Stringari,Eduardo H.; Petrauski,Alfredo; Petrauski,Sandra M. C.; Azevedo,Ricardo L.; Savaris,Gustavo.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to present a solution in glued laminated timber to replace frame structures built in reinforced concrete and metallic structure, which are common in agricultural buildings in western Paraná such as those destined to laying poultry house building by agricultural cooperatives. Structural behavior of frames build from Araucaria angustifolia glued boards and vegetable oil-based polyurethane adhesive was evaluated. Tests were carried out to characterize wood and adhesive to obtain verification/sizing parameters. Initially, a full-scale structural project was conducted to meet standard laying poultry house specifications. Afterwards, five units of straight three-articulated frames on a 1:2.5 reduced scale were designed, built, and...

Evidences of delayed size recovery in Araucaria angustifolia populations after post-glacial colonization of highlands in Southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Stefenon,Valdir M.; Behling,Hermann; Gailing,Oliver; Finkeldey,Reiner.
Up to date, little is known about the relationship between historical demography and the current genetic structure of A. Angus As a first effort towards overcoming this lack, microsatellite data scored in six populations and isozyme allele frequencies published for 11 natural stands of this species were analysed in order to assess molecular signatures of populations' demographic history. Signatures of genetic bottlenecks were captured in all analysed populations of southeastern Brazil. Among southern populations, signatures of small effective population size were observed in only three out of 13 populations. Southern populations likely experienced faster recovery of population size after migration onto highlands. Accordingly, current genetic diversity of...

Fast qualitative method based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) to date Gmelina arborea and Araucaria angustifolia wood Agrociencia
Bolzón-de Muñiz,G. Inés; Lomelí-Ramírez,M. Guadalupe; Mangrich,Antonio S.; Carbajal- Arizaga,G. Guadalupe.
In Brazil, Gmelina arborea is a common tree to produce char and the content of carbon is an important factor to correlate with the energy content or carbon sequestration capability, whereas Araucaria angustifolia occupies 6 % of its original territory and Brazilian laws protect old native specimens, since the commercial use of wood is restricted for young cultivated specimens. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is used for detection and quantification of organic free radicals (OFR) and, in this study, it was utilized for exploring OFR content along the rings of one log from G. arborea and A. angustifolia trees, both randomly chosen. The amount of OFR correlated with the carbon content in G. arborea and the age of rings in G. arborea and A....

Fenologia reprodutiva de espécies vegetais da Floresta Ombrófila Mista do Paraná, Brasil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Liebsch,Dieter; Mikich,Sandra Bos.
Foraging behavioral of Phylloscartes ventralis (Aves, Tyrannidae) in native and planted forests of southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Mendonça-Lima,André de; Hartz,Sandra M..
Few studies have related the effects of silviculture practices to the behavior of bird species in the Neotropics. The present study examined the foraging behavior of Phylloscartes ventralis (Temminck, 1824) in a native forest and in silviculture areas of Pinus elliotti and Araucaria angustifolia with different structures and ages. We tested two general hypotheses: (1) areas of commercial forest plantation change the foraging behavior of P. ventralis in relation to native forest, and (2) the foraging behavior of P. ventralis in silviculture areas with understories (complex structures) is different from its behavior in areas without understory. The results showed that P. ventralis changed its foraging behavior depending on the type of forest, and on the...

Functional patterns of tree communities in natural Araucaria forests and old monoculture conifer plantations Acta Botanica
Malysz,Marcelo; Müller,Sandra Cristina; Milesi,Silvia Vendruscolo; Santos,Anita Stival dos; Overbeck,Gerhard Ernst.
ABSTRACT A functional perspective of tree communities is helpful for understanding forest dynamics, especially vegetation recovery after other land uses. Knowledge about ecological filters and survival strategies of trees are also important for the restoration of degraded areas. This study aimed to evaluate the functional composition and structure of adult and regenerative components of natural Araucaria forests, Araucaria plantations and plantations of exotic Pinus in subtropical southern Brazil. Differences in functional diversity and functional richness, and in community weighted mean trait values, including leaf traits and reproductive traits, were analyzed. RLQ analysis was used to assess the association between community structure, plant traits and...

Immunocytochemistry of the mucilage cells of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze (Araucariaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
Mastroberti,Alexandra Antunes; Mariath,Jorge Ernesto de Araujo.
The use of monoclonal antibodies for specific pectic epitopes is an important tool in the study of the cell wall. Throughout the development of mucilage cells of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze, a gradient of distribution was observed in relation to the pectic de-esterification, as well as to the increase of galactan and arabinan epitope distribution, and to the reduction of arabinogalactans proteins (AGPs) epitope at maturity. AGP and methyl-esterified homogalacturonan (HGA) were present in the mucilage. Galactans and arabinans were also observed in the mucilage, though with weak labelling. Degradation of AGP in the maturity of mucilage cells, in cell wall, as well as in the secretion, could be involved in the programmed cell death (PCD)....

Improved method for isolation of coupled mitochondria of Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze BABT
Mariano,André Bellin; Kovalhuk,Leonardo; Valente,Caroline; Maurer-Menestrina,Juliana; Pereira-Netto,Adaucto Bellarmino; Guerra,Miguel Pedro; Carnieri,Eva Gunilla Skare.
A method for the isolation of coupled mitochondria from the callus of Araucaria angustifolia is described for the first time. Mitochondria were isolated from embryogenic callus of A. angustifolia. They were metabolically active, able to sustain oxidative phosphorylation as shown by respiratory control ratio values, which were about 2.4 when respiring on succinate as substrate. Oxygen uptake experiments, using freeze-thawed disrupted mitochondria, showed the presence of alternative rotenone-insensitive NAD(P)H dehydrogenases, which were stimulated by Ca2+. The procedure now described for the isolation of A. angustifolia mitochondria is an important new tool, allowing the investigation of mitochondrial bioenergetics and metabolism and physiology of plants.

Influence of anthropic impacts on remnants of Ombrophilous Mixed Forest in Santa Catarina State, Brazil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Liebsch, Dieter; Maçaneiro, João Paulo de; Marcon, Amanda Koche; Galvão, Franklin.
Selective cutting and pastures are common activities in the Ombrophilous Mixed Forest, which is part of the Atlantic Rain Forest Biome. Our goal was to relate floristic composition and structure unit with its past use. Adult and juvenile wood species of twelve forest fragments were evaluated in Santa Catarina State. Fragments with less anthropic impacts showed greater richness and diameter range, and lower density and frequency of multiple stems in the adult stratum, although basal area did not differ among fragments. Fragments with higher historical impact showed greater richness and lower density of juvenile stratum. The results showed that human impact on wood species community was so great that even after some decades floristic composition and...

Ikeda,Mônica; Carvalho,Carlos Wanderlei Piler; Helm,Cristiane Vieira; Azeredo,Henriette Monteiro Cordeiro de; Gogoy,Rossana Catie Bueno de; Ribani,Rosemary Hoffmann.
ABSTRACT: Brazilian pine seeds (pinhão) are gluten-free seeds produced by the native pine species named Araucaria angustifolia. In this study, gluten-free cake mixes composed of Brazilian pine seed flour and rice flour were developed. The cake mixes were produced following a Simplex Centroid experimental design, with rice flour and Brazilian pine seed flour contents ranging from 50 to 100% and from 0 to 50%, respectively. Mixes were analyzed for chemical composition, apparent paste viscosity, and particle size distribution. The resulting cakes were analyzed for sensory acceptance, texture, specific volume and chemical composition. The Brazilian pine seed flour showed a peak viscosity on heating of 1.761Pa.s against 4.747Pa.s for the 100% rice flour...

Late Holocene Vegetation History and Early Evidence of Araucaria angustifolia in Caçapava do Sul in the Lowland Region of Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil BABT
Behling,Hermann; Verissimo,Nuno; Bauermann,Soraia; Bordignon,Sergio; Evaldt,Andreia.
Little is known about the southernmost occurrence of small areas with Araucaria angustifolia populations in Caçapava do Sul in low elevated areas of Rio Grande do Sul State, about 130 km to the south of to the highlands of southern Brazil where the main distribution of Araucaria is found. This occurrence is about 130 km further south to the main area of Araucaria angustifolia which is on the highlands in southern Brazil. The question is whether this occurrence is natural, due to indigenous peoples, or due to plantation by post-Columbian settlers. To trace the origin of this little known southernmost existence of Araucaria angustifolia trees is of particular interest for conservation issues. To address this question we did a vegetation survey and studied a...
